Then write to your representatives and the President to stop bill HR 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009.
We cannot allow the government to decide if we want chemicals on our food or not. Nor can we let them take away our right to grow our own food!
To add some info:
I just wanted to add some info here, because, as has been pointed out, the bill doesn't actually say it's "banning organic farms". However consider some of the following:
While the bill doesn't mention organics or state that it will try to ban "organics", it does state the following:
who will be required to
Essentially, this gives the government the right to order organic farmers on what to feed their animals, how to treat them medically and require them to use certain sprays on their crops. In other words, not raise them organically.
While the bill doesn't mention organics or state that it will try to ban "organics", it does state the following:
(14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term ‘food production facility’ means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation.
who will be required to
(2) require each food production facility to have a written food safety plan that describes the likely hazards and preventive controls implemented to address those hazards;
(3) include, with respect to growing, harvesting, sorting, and storage operations, minimum standards related to fertilizer use, nutrients, hygiene, packaging, temperature controls, animal encroachment, and water;
Essentially, this gives the government the right to order organic farmers on what to feed their animals, how to treat them medically and require them to use certain sprays on their crops. In other words, not raise them organically.
I'm not saying that the government is going to absolutely crack down on home gardens, but, like many other broad stated laws, there is that wiggle room that the could. There are NO exemptions listed. This bill could cover anything from fishing boats to your garden to the hot dog vendor on the corner.
Part of what the bill proposes to do will place a huge burden on any of these people by requiring them to have "food safety plans". This would a monetary drain and a lot of work for every farm, many fishing boats, slaughterhouses, processing plants, CO-OPs and anyone else associated with growing, storing, transporting or processing food. The bill authorizes fines of up to $1,000,000 dollars for "each act" and for "each day" of a violation. That's one million dollars a day in fines. Great for a slaughterhouse that isn't up to standards. A small organic farm that didn't reach the minimum fertilizer number? Bang, out of business.

The fact that this is backed by Monsonto (you gotta read about this company!), a huge corporation that has very often used it's government connections to put small farms out of business (especially organic farms), is right off the top a red flag (BTW, they were also the makers of the lovely Agent Orange, sprayed on US military troops in Vietnam. They still refuse to compensate vets for the negative health effects of that).
Only huge companies will have the funds to keep up with these new regulations. And if a smaller company manages to do it, all it will take is one infraction to put them under. Just the legal fees alone to defend themselves would be crushing.
So to sum it up: required chemicals, required medical treatments for animals, required fees and payments, huge fines, no exemptions, sponsored bysatan Monsanto.

Here is one video about the subject:
I think everyone should explore this bill. Anyone with a vested interest in organics, homesteading, farming and the earth should educate themselves on what it means, and form their own opinions about it. Then they should take a step toward making their feelings known to their representatives, and quickly. This bill could be voted in as quickly as 2 weeks from now.

I think that this is a little bit of an alarmist view. Granted I am not a legal expert but I didn't find anything in the bill that screamed banning organics, didn't even find the word organic... I DO feel the one-size-fits-all approach is too limited though. I don't see the government coming in and fining me for my home garden because of this bill.
Hearing that Monsanto lobbied for the bill raised some flags for me, to generalize, I feel they are scum. In the past they had sponsored other horrible bills (such as the one where you can patent seeds I believe.) However I think some standards in the industry would be good. My husband works for a produce company and you should see the recalls he deals with.
Beyond blogs I am having some trouble finding non-alarmist information on this bill, but I did find an alert the OCA has out on HR 875 which is worth the read: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_17355.cfm but even then they support parts of the bill. I'm not saying we shouldn't be against this bill, I have issues with parts of it, but I feel we need to offer constructive criticism too. What parts we want thrown out and why.
Just my two cents.
The same kind of rules are about to come into effect in the European Union, and are about as drastic.Pressure from the American government was a main cuase for them to be accepted, because otherwise exports would be hindered if not impossible.
I think it is fine there are measures to ensure foodsafety and rules to prevent outbreaks of diseases like mad cow disease and foot and mouth, but I think this is overboard.Worrying me is indeed the fact that organic farming and the alternative livingstyle many witches and pagans have may become increasingly difficult. The new rules in the EU will make ik impossible for essential oils to be labeled as healing fe lavender can't claim a calming effect and can't be said to alleviate headaches. The same goes for herbal treatments and teas.
Gods, how absurd it is. I think this bill should be banned instead. Being so pro, as you well know, for organic food and the obvious right of people deciding what they want to have at their tables, I think all attention is needed, because anything can be used to justify suing farms which don't follow this program. What a shame... I don't think your post is alarmist (excuse me, Jaspenelle!), it's just a "I've seen this before" case. Absurd bills can end up being so corrosive...
Just went and sent them a note from your link. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
This is crazy! I'll definitely look into it more.
We are farmers. If Monsanto is backing this bill, you should be afraid. Very afraid. There is nothing about that company that is above board. I'm not an alarmist either, but I've seen what Monsanto will do to a farmer who they think has crossed them.
I've been thinking about this for a few days, since you posted this blog post actually. I kind of get the feeling that this isn't going to pass. I haven't put any research into my idea, so please bear with me...
I've read and/or heard on the news that Obama and his wife are putting in a garden complete with bees. It seems to me that our President is FOR our own gardens and organic farming. So, I don't think this bill will pass because our President is on our side. :D
I still think it's important to make our voices heard and I also think it's complete BS that someone would even start this bill. But I have a little hope that it won't get very far. Perhaps that's my own glass-half-full-thinking though.
P.S. My word verification is "palin." What are you trying to pull here? ;) :P
