Spring is coming, are you ready?

Spring is coming!  I keep telling myself that, at least, lol.  It is getting warmer, though, and my thoughts are turning to the Ostara sabbat and how I will celebrate.

As I've said before, when I first started in my path, I thought that the sabbats just had to be celebrated in full regalia - circles and calling all the quarters, rituals galore!  Buuuut, as I mellowed out and really got to the core of my beliefs, I figured out that it's not necessary. If you want to do it up in a big way (and I usually do for Samhain), that's great.  But necessary?  Not really.  These days I usually cook a really nice, season appropriate dinner and do a simple candle ceremony to celebrate.  Somewhere that day, or the weekend of, I will try to do some sort of appropriate activity - talking a walk out in nature, sharing food with someone, coloring eggs.

For the coming Equinox, I will do my usual colored egg ritual.  This is basically using natural items to dye raw eggs.  Then I blow out the insides, and fill them with herbs for specific  things.  I usually make a "Continued Love" egg, a "Protection Egg" and a "Prosperity Egg".  Then I'll use candle wax to close the egg back up.  For example, the prosperity egg is dyed green, filled with herbs that are related to prosperity, like cinnamon, basil, cloves, chamomile (you can find a complete list in any herbal or online).  (I usually do the herbs in batches of 3 - using either 3, 9 or 12 different herbs in each egg.)  Then I seal it with green wax.

Once all the eggs are done, I place them in a bowl on my altar for the season, then move them to a shelf for the rest of the year.  The next spring, when I make more, I bury the old ones in my garden.

Another tradition, one that I will be taking my daughter to do this year, is to wake up mother earth.   I've read that this dates back to the Celtic days, but, I'm not 100% sure that's correct, so don't quote me on that one, lol.    When I read about the tradition though, I really like it, so I've incorporated it in to my Spring celebrations.  Basically, it's just going to a patch of earth, pounding on the ground and inviting mother earth to wake up.  Of course, when I read this, it stated that you should take your staff, or a long wand, to do this.   I'm a pagan living in the suburbs on a limited budget.  The staff thing isn't really going to happen.  However, I've done this in my yard with my broom turned upside down.  I've done it sitting on a hilltop overlooking the bay near my home, just with the flat of my hand.  I've done it at the beach in the sand with a plastic shovel.  You know what?  Spring always comes, so it must be working! ;O)

Something that has always frustrated me, especially with people who have just found this path, but it happens with people who have been practicing for years as well:  when someone thinks that if they miss celebrating on the actual sabbat day, that they've just missed out.  Yes, it's great to do your rituals on the actual day of the sabbat, but do you really have to?  I don't think so.  The sabbat marks the start of the season.  Why not stretch your celebration out and make it last?    Think about the mainstream holidays.  Not the commercial aspect, but the family traditions that people hold.  Few people do them all on Christmas day, right? Days, if not weeks, are spent making holiday cookies, decorating a tree, creating decorations with the kids.  Not enough pagans, I think, carry that sort of thing on.  Celebrate a little here and there, when you can.  Relax and enjoy it!

Thanks for sharing your traditions / rituals with us.

I'm so glad that you bring up celebrating...I have a friend who ONLY celebrates each sabbat on THAT day. I don't disagree with her but I like your thinking better, which is something I do myself. Why not? Honestly life sometimes gets in the way of a good celebration - we don't choose when we get sick or hurt.

I like your egg idea... I bet they turn out awesome.

I love the egg idea! I think we may try that this year! :)

I love the egg idea....you could probably break them over each other's heads, like Mexicans do, instead of burying them. (kinda like showering blessings).

Your egg idea is truly inspiring! I've blown out raw eggs before, but how big a hole do you need to make in one end in order to get the herbs in? This may sound like a silly question, but having not ever tried to fill up a blown-out egg, I envision a bigger hole being required than just a pin. But then the bigger the hole, the harder to plug with wax.

So can you elaborate a little on hole size and how finely you grind the herbs before filling the egg?

Thank you so much!

And being one of the newbies to the path, I also thank you for clarifying that seasonal celebrations can be for all or any time of the season. This hasn't been totally obvious to someone like me who gets so intent on studying the details that I don't really feel ready to broaden interpretations on my own just yet even though doing just that is one of the appeals to the path. It's hard for someone who's followed the rules to feel comfortable making up her own :) It's nice to read that it's okay!

Jamie, I totally believe in to each his own, BUT I feel like we limit ourselves if we only celebrate on the exact sabbat. Especially for the kind of pagan that me and so many of those I know are: busy, modern, with homes and families and lives that need living! There is a whole season to celebrate!

Eva, if you do, I wanna see pictures!

Kali, I love that idea! Maybe I'll make a few new eggs this year just for that! "Luck" eggs, maybe?

ISP, yes, you do need a hole bigger than a pin hole, but it can still be small if you grind down your herbs. I usually mix them all up and grind them fine with my mortar and pestle. You can make a little paper funnel to help get them into the small hole. OR, I've done it another way on occasion: just crap those puppies right in half, empty, fill one side with herbs, and then "glue" the halves back together with the wax!

Annnnnd, if you don't feel like going through the trouble, or if you have time constraints, or you want to do this with smaller kids who don't have the dexterity, or you just think they are pretty.... use the plastic eggs that you can snap back together! You can actually find some really pretty ones these days. Instead of dying them, you can paint them, or use sharpies to draw symbols on them. Of course, you wouldn't want to bury the whole egg (if you do that step), but you could crack the contents into your garden, wash the eggs out re-use them.

If you do blow the eggs out, and the whole is just too big to seal with wax, for whatever reason, you can always put a "patch" over it. Just cut a piece of pretty paper down to a bit larger than the whole. You can glue it down, or just go around the edges with the wax.

Hope those help!

Oh, and I so remember when I was a "newbie" to the path. I did everything "by the book" as well. I wanted everything to be perfect, respectful and just so. After a while, though, when a lot of it becomes second nature, you really find your own way.

That's what, I think, is so great about paganism! So much room to make it so personalized!

I do agree with you so much, you know, about keeping things simple on sabbaths celebrations & not going nuts when I can't celebrate them on the "proper days"! And I loved your Waking ups Mother Earth idea, gonna try it with Lucas! How cool that Ostara is on your way, I love this day! Here we're hading Mabon.

Kisses!

I love that idea about the eggs, and waking up mother earth. Having 2 little ones makes waking up mother earth something fun to do.

When one of my brothers was about 3 her asked me if Mother Earth lived in the apartment above me. That is one of my favourite memories. Its fun when the kids think she is a real person like that.

Ohhh - I like your egg ritual. As a recovering Cathoic I have gotten out of any sort of ritual anything and have been looking for a way to do things "my way". I may have to encorporate that. :)

I love it when Spring finally comes! I swear I feel like I just woke up last week after day-light savings.. (I'm totally like a bear!)

The kids and I just did a little Ritual a few nights ago to say good bye to the last full moon of Winter.. they're still pretty small to understand, but we all had a fun time.

Glad you're hang in there and doing well.. how's things with the school district going?

I love your colored egg ritual! It sounds meaningful and fun. Thanks for sharing.

I've had to work around family plans, school, and other things since I started on my path (not very long, I have to admit xD) but I often don't get the chance to do much on the actual sabbat. At first I felt disappointed, but I've realized that the sabbats aren't just one day. The wheel of the year is constantly turning. The equinox is the celebation of Spring, and Spring is more than one day long. ;)

I like the prompt idea. When my mind burns itself out I tend to not have anything to write.

We color eggs and do the wake up the earth thing too. Only we use tambourines and bang pots together while shouting "Wake up trees!" at the top of our lungs as we walk around to the various clumps of trees & shrubbery on our property. Fortunately we live in the country so we don't bother anyone.

And if it rains we postpone it for a sunny day. I also do my ritual 'spring cleaning' on a day closest to the equinox that is convenient for me. If I had to do it on the actual equinox it would rarely get done

I love your egg ritual, its so earthy and witchy! I bet they eggs are beautiful. A couple of years ago at an Ostara ritual I attended, I was "blessed" by having a confetti egg cracked over my head. Such fun!

Pounding on the earth to wake it up is an awesome ritual too! It is something that is still practiced today by Morris Dancers. They wear bells on their legs and carry a stick in each hand, which they bang together and against the ground while they dance to wake up the earth (according to a PBS show I watched!) Morris dancing is also related to fertility and I think, predates Maypole dancing. It's fascinating to watch.

I've done that egg ritual, it's wonderful, so far my last egg worked, it was on growth. I've grown a lot since then and I think i shall make one on prospeirity, and growth this year. With my boyfriend hopefully, because I think it should be an activity to do with loved ones.
Also thanks for the idea of placing them on your altar, that will be good.

I love the idea of putting the herbs in the eggs. I have a list somewhere of natural dyes that I need to find. I am glad you mentioned it. If I find it I will try and post it on my blog.

We're going to pound on some dirt tomorrow. That is right up my alley! I know that spring is coming when the tree swallows come back home and we've had three or four flying around the past few days! Right in time for a dirt wake up call. And your prompts sound like a lovely way to expand in blog land!

I was out in the back yard yesterday afternoon, stomping away, chanting to Mother Earth to please wake up - LOL! It's wonderful!!

And thanks so much for answering my egg questions!
