And you know how I went on vacation (yeah, yeah, I said I wouldn't post about it again, but this is going somewhere, I swear!)?
What I might have neglected to tell you about is... well, the load of wet towels that I left in my washer when I left. For a week. Yes, the big, bad domestic witch left wet towels in her washer for days on end. In the summer.
So you can imagine what the whole mess smelled like when I got home? Not only were the towels musty and gross, sure enough, my shiny new washer was musty and stinky.
. I will tell you right off, I wanted that smell gone. I'm not a big bleach user, or I would have just dumped some bleach in and been done with it. So I went looking for the answer to getting rid of the mildewy grossness that was the smell in my washer - something natural, something that isn't sinking into the groundwater and damaging the environment.
So what's a girl to do? Well, apparently, you get this:

Smelly Washer. An all natural cleaner, citrus based cleaner made just for removing smells from the washing machine. When I got this bottle, I thought it was a one time use thing. Nope. All it takes is one tiny capful to get the stink out of your washer. And then you wash your towels in it, to get the musty smell out of them, too! Even if you used this stuff every couple of weeks, one bottle is going to last for about a year. Now that is some bang for your buck!
And that little capful? Works like a charm!!
If you want to see how it works, you can take a look at this video (I was going to embed it, but I couldn't find the embed code, lol!)
And, as always, if I find something I like online, I have to find a way to share it with the folks who read my blog. So I talked to the a nice guy named Jeff over at Smelly Washer about his washing machine cleaner, and he told me a few interesting things.
First off, that he'd let me give a bottle away! Hurray! So one of you can own your own bottle of this product! Details will follow on how to win.
The other thing Jeff told me is that Smelly Washer is running a contest right now, too. With a prize that I could never even hope to offer! And it's just for bloggers! What you need to do is get a bottle of the product and create a video about it. The blogger who creates the best video receives a free all inclusive trip to Las Vegas! You can find more details here: http://www.smellywasher.com/contest .
How cool would it be to win that? As an added bonus, Jeff gave me a promotional code, so that my readers can get 10% off the cost of the product if they buy between now and August 31. So if you want to try it because your washer smells like you went on vacation for a week in the summer and left towels in it, or just want to try and win the vacation, enter the code "silvermoonwitch" into the promotional code thingy when you order.
Annnnd, for full disclosure, the blogger who gets the most people over to buy this product before the end of August can win $250. And since those winnings would be based on the work of readers, if I happen to win that money, I will offer $50 back in the form of a gift card giveaway!
But, for now, on to the Smelly Washer giveaway!

That reminds me - I need to switch the laundry over. You were able to save the towels? Wow! I think I would have thrown them out. That is amazing.
I'm not a big bleach fan myself. I probably would have tried vinegar. I never would have thought their was a product for that. Thanks.
My Rare One lets wet laundry sit in the washer all the time and refuses to believe me when I say it will go musty as a result. I MUST HAVE HER READ YOUR POST. Thank you, Pagan Soccer Mom!
My favourite article is definitely the how to clean your dishwasher one. My washing machine could use a good cleaning as well. Thanks for offering this giveaway!
Forgot to mention, I'm a follower of your blog as well.
Cool find! I have a front loader washer and for some reason it builds up mildew in the seals. It might be great for water conservation, but I hate having to clean out the seals...and bleach only works so much...I end up having to get in there with paper towels to get rid of it all. I think I might need to try some of this!!
If you have a front loader, definitely watch the linked video! It talks all about why front loaders grow mildew! It's got to do with not using hot water, the machines using limited water, and using too much detergent.
It's really an informative video!
Great giveaway, Mrs. B! I certainly appreciated the blog article (Reasons Why Your Top Load Washer Smells) - because mine really does smell :) Now I have a much better idea why. Thanks for the resource!!
Also, I already am a (loyal) follower of yours :)
I have now tweeted about this :) @ifartfairydust

Hello there! I have the problem with musty stinky old clothes too... especially ones that we stored away in the off season, they usually smell horrible by the time we get them back out! I'm so excited to try something that can restore those things that I usually throw away each year because I've never found anything that works! My favorite article is "Cleaning Lint from a Stinky Washer." And I'm a follower of your blog already :) and I blogged about it, and posted about it on my facebook :) Oh, and and and, my birthday is August 5th... so maybe I could get an extra entry :) (overly exaggerated wink)!!!

and on facebook you can find me by my first and last name K. Hunt. And as always I adore your blog!!!
Hey, my birthday is Aug. 5 too! I liked the article about alternatives to dryer sheets. I think I may have purchased my last box of 'em based on that article.
I'd love an entry. Am a follower too.
Oh, I totally use the dryer balls! I haven't used dryer sheets in well over a year!
Not only do we not miss the sheets at all, our towels are WAY fluffier and absorbent because they aren't weighed down with all that chemical residue!
I highly recommend them!
I found "What Causes Washing Machine Odor and Towel Mildew Smell?" to be informative.

My favorite article is Fabric Softener, Dryer Sheets or Dryer Balls? Who knew what grew in the residue left by soft, nice smelly goo?
When my front loader kept overflowing I called the company. The guy they sent over showed me that I was using too much soap. I now use WAY below what the box reads and that problem's been eliminated. Also he told me to use white vinegar instead of softener. Towels come out much softer. Pretty cool, huh?
Yikes, a week? That sucks. Glad the cleaner helped! I've left rugs in flooded basements before *shudder*, I can only imagine how bad your washer must have smelt.
I actually really need this! I'm not sure what happened, but my washer is really stinky and I'm having terrible trouble getting my clothes to smell nicely after they've been washed! Even after hanging them outside to dry, they often smell of dirty socks...GROSS!! I have a feeling it has to do with our going on vacation and my teen son leaving his laundry in there for a few days (without telling me he started the load). Blech.
My favorite article on the Smelly Washer site is "How To Clean A Washing Machine That Stinks", mostly because it immediately drew my eye and I'll be using their techniques TODAY!
I'm a new baby follower of your blog via my facebook account (Janeen Brown). I tweeted this giveaway here: http://twitter.com/BrumePath/statuses/3146612396 and I blogged about this great giveaway here: http://brumepath.com/2009/08/05/giveaways-for-the-domestic-witch/
Thank you so much for the opportunity! I hope I squeezed in...had to change two diapers, take a toddler to the bathroom three times and refill juice sippy cups as well as play an animated video to get this done lol!
What a cool product! I have got to get some of that. I wonder if they make one for dishwashers.
