Inviting Hestia Into Your Heart and Home

The Hestia Tapestry "Hestia full of Blessings"

There are many, many domestic deities from which to choose from when looking for one to invite into your home.  From well known Greek Goddesses to little know Chinese oven Gods to animistic gods of ancient Rome.  One of the most well known and popular is Hestia, Greek Goddess of the hearth, home and domestic duties.

Magical Correspondences for December

If you are looking to do magical works in the month of December, here are a few correspondences to strengthen and fire up your workings *:

Photo by Andre Karwatha via Wikimedia Commons
December’s Zodiac signs include Sagittarius (November 23 - December 22)  and Capricorn (December 23 - January 20).  It’s birthstone is turquoise and it’s birthflower is poinsettia or narcissus .  The lucky number for the month is 3.

When working with color in December, consider using green, bright red or turquoise

If you are looking for stones to work with this month, consider aquamarine, bloodstone, lapis lazuli, peridot, ruby, blue topaz or turquoise.  Carry one or more on your person, use them in a monthly magic mojo bag, or set them out this month on a window sill to charge throughout the month. Choose one or more to research and add to your book of shadows.

November’s animals bear, goat, snowy owl, wolf and groundhog.  To incorporate these animals, add a statue or photo of your choice of animal to your altar or read about how them can be used as totem animals. Mythical creatures for the month are sylvan spirits (spirits of the woods).
The best plants to work with during December consist of Christmas cactus, evergreen trees, holly, ivy, mistletoe, oak and poinsettia.  Keep a small pot of one on your altar, add one or more to your monthly mojo bag, research them, plan recipes around them or make an infusion of them to add to your cleaning water. Decorate with evergreen boughs, decorate an outdoor tree with food for the birds, hang mistletoe in your doorway.

December’s signature incense?   A mix of holly leaves and oak wood.

Goddesses associated with December are Athena, the Fates, Freya, Hathor, Hekate, Ix Chel, Lucina, Minerva, Neith, The Norns, and Vesta.

Gods include Attis, Dionysus, Freyr, the Horned God, Odin, Osiris, Poseidon and Saturn
The New Moon appears on the 5th at 12:36 pm EST.
December’s full moon will appear on December 21st at 3:13 am EST.  It goes by many different names:
  • Cold Moon (Algonquian)
  • Big Bear's Moon (Winnebago)
  • Small Spirits Moon (Chippewa)
  • Moon When the Wolves Run Together (Cheyenne)
  • Month of Respect (Hopi)

The First Quarter moon happens the 13th at 8:59 am EST while the Last Quarter is the 27th at 11:18 pm EST.

Month-long observances that take place in November include National Write a Business Plan Month, Spiritual Literacy Month, Universal Human Rights Month

Thanksgiving is the perfect time for the domestic witch to bring magic into a meal.  On a day that often sees family gather from near and far, it's a great opportunity to infuse your meal with magical intentions and blessings.  What's the difference between just cooking a meal and making it magical?  The knowledge of the traditional and/or magical correspondences of the ingredients, and cooking with intent.  While you measure, pour, mix and cook, think about what you are trying to infuse into the dish.  Additionally, you can hum or chant words or words about your intentions.  The following are some of the traditional foods and ingredients of a Thanksgiving dinner and their correspondences.
Main dishes
  • Tofu - used to promote healing and health
  • Turkey - eat to bring blessings
  • Pasta - spaghetti and linguine are eaten to promote protection

  • Oysters - eaten for desire and fertility
  • Parsley - increases feelings of affection
  • Sage - increases feelings of gratitude
Pie and dessert ingredients
  • Pie - eaten to increase love of self and love for another
  • Pumpkin - eaten to honor loved-ones past
  • Rhubarb - feed to a spouse to help with fidelity, feed to children for protection
  • Blackberry - Heightens sexual bond in partners
  • Blueberries - eaten near the full moon, they bring protection to the physical body
  • Cherry - boosts self-confidence
  • Vanilla - promotes happiness and feelings of love
  • Molasses - used for increasing strength
  • Nutmeg - for luck and generosity
Nuts

Monday Mutterings

Just a quick note to let you know that I will be taking most of this week off from blogging.  Much to do, not enough time to do it in!

I will be posting links to Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales on Thanksgiving, though, so stay tuned for that!!  And there's still time to get in on the listing if you'd like to be included.  Just fill out this form if you sell handcrafted/handmade crafts or artwork.

Also, I've decided to stop writing for Examiner, for a variety of reasons.  My daily correspondence articles will pick back up on December 1st right here on this blog, so watch for them to start back up soon!

Tomorrow and Wednesday I'll be linking to some "oldie but goody" articles that I hope will get you in the right mood for Thanksgiving and the coming holidays!

Have a great day!

here's what you need to do:

  • Be 18 years old or older.
  • Comment to this post (or email me) with your contact info (a blog address, facebook or email, DO NOT give out your phone number or actual address!!) and your county and state and any info you'd like to share (if you'd like to start or join a group, what flavor of Pagan you are (eclectic, Wiccan, etc.).
  • If you have any takers on starting a group, or anyone who can point you at existing groups, please use your common sense in connecting with them.  Email back and forth before committing to anything.  Meet several times in a public place and get to know the person.  Find out what they are after as a part of a group.  Do not give out your address until you are sure of your own personal safety!
If you would like a group listed, please contact me with the name of the group, location, a website for the group and a short overview of what the group is about.

CPSM is not responsible for those who participate in this listing, or for the actions taken by those who participate.  ALWAYS USE COMMON SENSE when meeting new people: Always meet in a well-lit, public place.  Tell someone where you are going and who you are meeting.  Don't get in a car with someone you don't know.  Make sure you have the person's real name before considering meeting them (telling someone you are going to meet "Raindancer Puddlewind" is not going to help find him/her if you don't come home from your meeting!).
