Clearing Your Sink and Magically Sealing It

Photo by Stilfehler via Wiki Commons
Is there anything worse than trying to do dishes and finding your sink full of water?  One of my biggest pet peeves is having a clogged sink (just ask my family how often they hear "You better scrape that plate before you rinse it!!!").  Nothing is worse than trying to rinse dishes and having the sink fill up with gross, dirty water because it can't get through the drain.  Blech.

I started long ago doing a weekly ritual (it can be done monthly if you don't use your sink as often as I do -feeding 5 (more often 6) people several meals a day means my sink gets a lot of business) of clearing my drain with baking soda and vinegar.  Not only does it help clear the drain and pipes of greasy clogs, it's also quite magically cleansing.

Realizing I was doing a little magic with my mundane (my favorite!) I also realized that by clearing and cleansing my drain, I was also leaving it open to letting in negative vibrations.  So many of us ward out windows and doorways, but our pipes lead out into the world just the same.  It's just as important to seal them up to.  Here's how I do mine:

First off,  I throw some baking soda into my drain.  About 1/2 a cup.

Next off, since it's in there, and does such a great job, I go ahead and give the sink a good scrub.  It usually needs it, lol!

Next off comes the vinegar.  I usually have a huge jug of this in the pantry, since it's good for so many things.  I pour in about 1 cup, let it foam for a bit, then pour in about another cup and let it foam away for a bit.

To show you how great this works, I did this when we first moved into our house, and (I swear) a 10" paint brush (like that comes in the kid's water color set) popped right up, followed by several swizzle sticks.  Have to wonder about the people who lived here before us...

Next, pour in a kettle of hot water, to wash everything down through the pipes.

At that point you could stop.  If you do this once a week, it will help keep your drain nice and clear and running smoothly.  Way better than ending up with a clog and trying to pour down some caustic clog remover!

If you'd like, you can continue on and seal your drains while your at it, though.  Some people simply squeeze the juice of a lemon right into the drain (do it for all of them - sinks, toilets, dish washer, etc.), and that's a perfectly great way to do it.

FYI, do NOT try this at home.  Use that nice juicer tool you have in the back of your drawer.  Squeezing the juice out of a lemon around a knife blade is only for us crazy folk professionals.

Being someone who loves their herbs and hoodoo washes, I like to take it one step further, and brew up a nice batch of herbal protection tea.

Throw a handful of herbs (fresh or dried) that correspond with protection into your pot with 3 or so cups of water, bring to a simmer, then turn off the heat and let steep for 10 minutes or so.  Throw a strainer right in the sink, and strain the liquid right into your kitchen sink.  If you want to do all the drains, just strain it into a bowl so you can pour off a little at a time.

Viola!  Clean, clear and protected drains!

This has been our "habit" as well for many years but I have not done hoodoo sealing before....this I will try.
I have a gazillion things I use vinegar for, I wonder, how many uses for vinegar there are for the domestic witch community? Hmmmmmmmm. The Olde Bagg, Linda

Oooh, it never even occurred to me to get the drains. I think of wall outlets, but good old-fashioned water passage? D*oh!

This is absolutely great! Apparently I missed something in sink care 101 because I have never heard of using baking soda and vingar to clean a drain. Vingar in the laundry for pet blankets and towels though- that is a must!

Love the magical twist- have done that for a friend before, and it consisted of raiding her pantry and putting together cooking herbs and tea packets because that was all she had. Still worked, all the same!

Love your site!
Brightest Blessings,
Emma

A very useful post. Do you have the recipe for your protection tea posted somewhere that I missed?

we usually just pour hot water on a regular basis (several times a week as we make herbal teas frequently) down all the drains EXCEPT the toilet. never pour hot water in your toilet bowl!

I never thought of cleansing my sink! I mean of course I clean the sink and I've always loved a nice sparkling stainless steel sink, but I never even thought of magickally protecting it! Thanks so much for this... I'm going to do it right now, as soon as I was the dishes that are sittin... erm piled... in the sink!
