- Mulch: do it after the first frost, but before the first snow. This will keep your plants from being completely damaged by freezing. By waiting until after the first frost, you'll keep animals from nesting in the mulch.
- Clean up: Remove your stakes, dispose of any string you were using in the garden, compost your annuals.
- Paperwhites: If you start paperwhites in late November, they'll be flowering in time for Yule or Christmas. Potting and forcing bulbs in doors now will give you a bit of cheer through the winter!
- Hand tools: Now is the time to get them cleaned, repaired, blades sharpened and put away so they'll be ready for next spring.
- Seeds: Order your seed catalogs now and start planning for next year!
- Bird Feeders: Give them a good cleaning and get them filled up.
- Hoses: Drain your garden hoses and store them for the winter. Turn off your outside faucets before the first freeze.
- Planters and Pots: Anything you aren't wintering over, give a good scrub and store. Dirty pots can spread disease to your new spring plantings.
- Give one last offering to your land guardians or the fairy folk. Ask them to look after your property through the cold months.
- Consider putting a spirit house on your property. Popular in some Asian countries, spirit houses are small houses that give shelter to your land guardians.
- Check out your snow shovel. If it needs replaced, do it now, before the first snow.
- Stock up on salt for your front porch/stairs.
I'd also suggest stocking up on plenty of books to keep you busy through the winter! I tend to hibernate the cold NJ winters away indoors, so I make the winters a time to learn new things! Pick up a new form of divination, learn about a new pantheon, explore an form of energy healing or practice your psychic self defense. And don't forget to get out at least 15 minutes a day in the sunlight to help stave off the winter blues!

This year I don't have much preparation to do at all, because we just moved. I have some leaves to rake, but I already mulched and trimmed the overgrown roses and readied them for winter (and boy was I glad because we got hit with 34 inches of snow over Halloween! lol). Usually November is my time for going over all my year's garden pictures, checking what seeds I have in store and which ones need to be gotten rid of because they're out of date.
This year I have the added joy of planning my spring garden. I have a huge area to the side of the house where I will be putting in an asparagus bed, a strawberry "tower" or two, and our brand new raised beds. I have the whole winter to collect wood timbers to build the raised beds with. I'm all excited!
What a wonderful list-since it's getting dark so early now that the time has changed I've been a bit moody and sad. This list will help me get outside and help me feel reconnected again. I can't wait to find a little spirit house to go in my garden. Thanks so much.
Great tips! :)
Don't forget about stocking up on Baileys for those nights in front of the fire! Enjoy your nesting!
Very good advice. Thanks for the tips!
I think I will leave gardening to the earthly elements who do not kill what they touch with their deadly black thumb, but really I just wanted to stop in and tell you that I love your blog and will continue to read it weekly :)
Any suggestions on nice indoor plants for winter? I can't get anything until January (roommate's cat attacks them) but when we have our own apartment I'd love something bright to have in the house. :)
Books are being stocked up on that's for sure! I am such an indoor person in the winter. Thank goodness for my Kindle, as I am moving across country and can't bring my boxes and boxes of books.
This information is fabulous. Thanks, Mrs. B!
Yes - now that the snow has arrived, I've got to get those bird feeders filled - and find a way to keep them away from the deer!
I hope to get into gardening soon.
I still live with my fiances parents so I don't have much space...at all. But these are very lovely tips.
