There are dozens of simple ways to take part in Earth Day!  Simply commit to change one thing in your life or do something just for today that will make a long-term improvement!

Here are some ideas:
  • Unplug your phone charger when your phone is not actually charging.
  • Start composting!
  • Plant a tree, bushes or perennial flowers (look for ones that are bee/bird/butterfly friendly!)
  • Start recycling
  • Start using reusable cloth bags
  • If you don't use reusable bags, take back your plastic bags for recycling - many grocery stores accept bags from any grocer.
  • Consider getting an ebook reader or ebook program for your computer  and save some trees by downloading books, newspapers and/or magazines.
  • Hold your own version of Earth Hour every month!
  • Commit to using energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Adopt a street, park or beach nearby and commit to picking up trash there once a week or once a month.
  • Join your local Freecycle and start using it!
  • Make a special Earth Day meal using only local and/or organic ingredients.
  • Find your local farmer's markets and commit to buying fresh, local produce.
  • Clean out your closets.  Instead of throwing away outgrown or unneeded items, donate them to a thrift store.
  • Buy a bike (look for a second hand!) or get a tune up on the one you own - then use it!
  • Start a garden, even if it's just herbs on your window sill.
  • Start making your own cleaning supplies.

And here are some deals that you can take advantage of for Earth Day:
  • Take in a travel mug to any Starbucks or Carribou Coffee today and get a free coffee! Carribou offers 50 cents off every single day when you bring in your own cup.
  • Visit Lowes on April 23 to get a free tree in honor of Earth Day!
  • Many National Parks are offering free admission this weekend!
  • Patagonia clothing has teamed up with musical acts to benefit the environment.  Purchase a song and funds go to a non-profit environmental group.
  • Take a bottle of your current face cleanser (full or empty) to an Origins store  and get a free cleanser (fill out this form to take with you).
  • Enter Target's contest and win a sustainable home makeover.

Moon Phases 101

Lunar libration with phase2
By Tomruen, via Wikimedia Commons

Working with the phases of the moon can greatly strengthen your magical workings.  Knowing what type of work goes with which moon phase can be a little tricky when you're starting out, but once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature.  With a little tweaking, you can fit your magic to whatever moon phase is currently happening.  More on that at the end, though!

New Moon: The term "new moon" indicates the first three days that the moon becomes visible after the dark moon. The phase is a strong time for meditation work, for working on forgiveness, healing, initiations or consecrations, romance, self-improvement and personal growth.  If you are planning a project that will take an extended time to complete, the new moon is a great time to begin it.
Goddess to work with during the new moon include (but are not limited to): Artemis, Athena, Brigid, Clotho, Isis, Juno, Laksmi, the Maiden, Mary and Selene.
Gods include: Apollo and Osiris.

Waxing Moon: The waxing phase of the moon is from the dark of the moon to the full moon.  In other words, the moon is "growing" larger, and it's appropriate for magical works for growth and enhancement.  Work on any type of new beginnings in your life (alternately think of this as "attraction" magic), whether it's a new job, a new love or new friends.  Things that need to be "grown"  or increased can be worked on as well: prosperity, good health, increasing psychic talents, fertility, courage, passion, ideas.  This phases is also good for planting seeds or transplanting plants.  Traditionally, this is the moon phase under which you should harvest your magical herbs.
Goddesses to work with during the waxing moon include (but are not limited to): Artemis, Diana, Epona, the Maiden, Neith.

Full Moon: The phase when the moon's power is the strongest.  Any magic will benefit from being done in this phase.  The best types of workings to be done include divination, dream work,  working on goals or ideas,  protection, empowerment and hex removal.
Goddesses to work with during the full moon include (but are not limited to): Arianrhod, Artemis, Astarte, Danu, Diana, Freya, Isis, Juno, Selene, Yemaya.
Gods to work with include: Jupiter, Odin, Osiris and Thor.

Waning Moon: The waning moon lasts from the full moon to the dark moon.  While the moon is "shrinking" work on things you'd like to shrink, remove, end or transform.  Work on breaking bad habits, ending bad relationships, banishments, ending injustices or reducing weight.  It's also a good time for easing aches and pains or transforming chronic illnesses.
Goddesses to work with during the waning moon include (but are not limited to): Annis, Astarte, the Cailleach,  Hecate, Inanna, and Lilith.
Gods include: Tammus.

Dark Moon: When the moon is not visible many magical practitioners choose to take a rest from magic.  This time can be used as a time for relaxation.  Some use it as a time for meditation or divination.  Some traditions use the dark moon as a time for casting hexes or jinxes.
Goddesses to work with include: the Crone, Hecate and Lilith.

Blue Moon: A blue moon is the second moon happening within one month.  Blue moons are a powerful time to practice divination, work on protection or perform wish magic.  It's also a powerful time for fertility related magic.

At some point, you may find yourself in need of working on a specific type of magic but don't want to have to wait for the appropriate moon phase.  The trick for this is simply to twist the idea of what you are working on.  Example: It's the Waxing moon, but you feel a strong urge to work on loosing weight.  Instead of waiting for the waning moon, simply change the goal you are working on to "increasing my intake of healthy, lower calorie foods".  Example 2: It's the phase of the waning moon when you realize you really need to disentangle yourself from a friend who is an energy suck and only brings you negative energy.  Instead of working on exiting that friendship, change your intent into growing your self-sufficiency or growing your circle of strong, positive friends.  It can also be very beneficial to work the waxing, waning and full moons towards your goal in this way.

10 Things to do with honey

Wiki Commons
Clearing out a cabinet the other day, I realized I had no less than 4 half empty jars of honey.  Different kinds, organic, local - I can always find a reason to buy another jar.  What to do with it all?  Honey is an amazing product that can be used in many culinary, medicinal and even cosmetic ways.  Here's a list of a few ways to use it!
  1. Mix 4 parts softened butter with one part honey to make honey butter.  Put it on fresh bread (or store bought - we won't judge), pancakes, baked sweet potatoes, corn bread - it's great on most any baked good.
  2. Add to tea.  Not only a natural sweetener for every day, but also great for a cold or sore throat (shot of rum or whiskey optional).
  3. Blueberry Mead,

  4. Whip up a batch of Blueberry Mead (we do this every Summer Solstice!)
  5. Mix up a skin scrub with honey.  Here's a recipe that will exfoliate, hydrate and make you smell good enough to eat!
Mix together: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup honey, 1/4 cup almond oil (look around the cosmetic/hair area for a small, inexpensive bottle!), and 1/4 cup grated (unsweetened) chocolate.  Apply to skin in the shower, gently scrub, then rinse.
  6. Eating local honey is said to relieve up to 90% of hay-fever type allergies, as it exposes you to local pollens, helping you to build up a tolerance.
  7. Some studies show that including honey in your diet can help lower cholesterol.
  8. Honey can be used as a natural sleep aid.
  9. Use on small cuts or abrasions.  Honey has been shown to have natural antiseptic properties.
  10. Try replacing sugar in a recipe with honey.  Here's an article with some great tips to help.
  11. In magic, honey attracts prosperity, love and fertility.  It's also a great offering to the goddess Oshun.  It's traditional to taste the honey offering first, to show that it's not poisoned.
And a magical bonus: If you are trying to conceive, smear a small pumpkin down with honey and toss it in a flowing river.

What is your favorite honey use?

Special Needs Class Requests Postcards

Saw this on Facebook, had to share.  Let's help fill up the wall for this class!  A post card and stamp costs next to nothing, but it could really show a special bunch of kids that people are thinking of them!

I received this in my email from my friend, Kacee. if you live far from Colorado, will you consider sending these kids a postcard? Feel free to share this with your friends, too. What a cool idea! Thank you! :)
"Hey, friends and family,Peggy, a teacher friend of mine here in Colorado, hopes to paper an entire wall of her special education classroom with postcards from all over the world. I think this is a delightful idea, and I am hoping I can enlist your help. If you have time and some spare change, please just pick up a postcard, address it toPeggy Henninger 5090 Golden Valley TrailCastle Rock, CO 80109and drop it in the mail. If you are traveling or know someone who is, and they can drop a postcard from wherever they visit, even better. You don't have to even write a message, although I am sure one would be welcome. She is simply looking for scads of postcards from a wide variety of places, and all will be appreciated and put to use. Feel free to share this with anyone you think might participate. It is not a Snopes-style "sick child who wants postcards from everywhere" type story: just a friend of mine who is putting the cards to use in her class as a visual aid to broaden these children's horizons, so they see what a wide and wonderful world we live in. The project will go on for years, so there is no deadline, per se. But I know the kids in her class this year will be excited if they see an initial response between now and when school lets out in May.Much love and thanks,Sandra"

Think Witch Hunts are a Thing of the Past? Or that they only happen in Africa?

Over the past 8 days, I've been talking about the witch hunts in Africa as part of 30 Days of Advocacy Against Witch Hunts.  If you think witch hunts are only taking place in Africa, as part of a confused religious mix of traditional African practices and what the Christian missionaries have brought to their shores, you'd be wrong.

Here are some articles dealing with modern accusations of witchcraft and with witch hunts from around the world:

Some of these can obviously be blamed on mentally disturbed individuals.  Some have been perpetrated by governments.  Some are on our doorsteps.

30 Days of Advocacy Against Witch-Hunts, Day 7

This is part four of a series of posts to support 30 Days of Advocacy Against Witch-hunts, a campaign of  South African Pagan Rights and supported by the South African Pagan CouncilPagan Federation InternationalPagan Federation England and Wales, Correllian Nativist Tradition (U.S.A. & S.A.),  Circle Sanctuary (U.S.A.) and Touchstone Advocacy. The Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network began in 2003.  A group of young volunteers who came together to care for children accused of being witches and wizards in Nigeria.  By 2006 CRARN was caring for 30 children, many of the with serious injuries and illnesses. Today around 200 children get services via CRARN including "security, safety, healthcare, nutrition, counseling, education and skills training."

Check out this video where a Nigerian motorcycle club comes to visit the children:

Yesterday I posted about Stepping Stones Nigeria and one way to help the organization by donating to my fundraiser.  Today's post for 30 Days of Advocacy Against Witch Hunts is about a global campaign created by SSN and their Nigerian partner organizations called PACT.  PACT stands for Prevent Abuse of Children Today and it's aim is to bring long-term positive social change to the vulnerable children of the Niger Delta, particularly those at risk of child rights violations including witchcraft-related abuse and trafficking.

So today's way to help?  Sign the PACT.
